Baja Kayak and Whale Adventure

About the Experience

This beginner friendly expedition in Baja, Mexico is a thrilling multi-sport adventure that includes one of the most spectacular sea-kayaking trips in North America – known as the “Galapagos of Mexico” for its diverse marine ecology.

Paddling a sleek sea kayak off Baja’s remote Isla Espiritu Santo, you’ll quickly find out how remarkably easy it is to escape the ordinary by immersing yourself in this island’s vibrant natural panorama.

A gentle sea swell ushers your boat along the base of richly hued volcanic cliffs and into quiet, beach-lined coves. Schools of tropical fish swim beneath your bow. Frigate birds soar like flying dinosaurs high overhead. And on rocky sanctuaries just offshore, sea lion colonies and bird rookeries teem with noisy activity. Best of all: fleeting glimpses of dolphins and even breaching whales breaking the silky horizon of the Sea of Cortez.

Our Wild Women Baja adventure begins with a night of canyon camping under a star-studded sky next to stunning natural hot springs. This journey will take you to La Paz where you will enjoy days of voyaging around the coast of Espiritu Santo Island by kayak.

Your paddle will transport you to hidden lagoons, spectacular bays, and sea caves that you’ll never wish to leave. Nothing is as we’ve seen before as we take to the sea to snorkel with sea lion pups, bathe in the glorious Baja sun, watch manta rays leap from the water, swim with whale sharks, and visit the Gray Whales of Magdelena Bay.

Day One: Arrival

Arrive at Los Cabos (SJD) Airport by 3pm and rendezvous with the group in San Jose del Cabo for transfer to Santiago (approx. 1.5 hours).

Here, you will meet your local Baja guide who will lead the group to a remote camping area. A short hike takes you into a protected canyon where you arrive at the picture perfect campground beneath a wild fig tree. Within a stone’s throw of this campsite is a beautiful natural hot spring – the perfect place to relax after a long day of traveling. Following a soak and a delicious dinner you will sleep in the peaceful serenity of your new home under a million stars.

Day Two: La Paz

Enjoy a morning at the hot springs and then pack-up and transfer to La Paz (approx. 2.5 hours). Stop in the village of San Bartolo for hand made tamales and burritos. You will check into your hotel in La Paz and then walk along the sea promenade to enjoy the bay views and discover this enchanting seaside town. Tonight you dine in an authentic local La Paz restaurant.

Day Three: Swim with Sea Lions

After an early breakfast you will motor out in a boat shuttle to UNESCO World Heritage Site, Espiritu Santo Island National Park. You will begin your island adventure with one of the trip highlights: face-to-face snorkelling with playful sea lion pups! This experience will take your breath away as you watch their amazing underwater acrobats. Back at your beach campsite, and following a feast of Mexican corn tamales, you will receive a beach-camping and sea kayak orientation. Tonight you camp on Ensenada Grande beach.

Day Four to Six: Kayak Espiritu Santo Island

Arise to the splendour of camping on a beautiful protected desert island. Over the next three days, you will be exploring, camping and snorkelling along the coast of the Espiritu by sea kayak. This mini expedition entails kayaking each day, carrying gear up and down beaches, helping to set up campsites and many opportunities for wildlife viewing, snorkelling, and exploring the island.

Camping stops may include Candelero, Coralito Bay, and Dispensa Beach, the location of an intricate mangrove ecosystem.

Your backcountry kayak adventure is a ‘cooperatively catered’ trip in that there is no motor boat support. Therefore, you are kayaking fully loaded kayaks and participating in all the camping and cooking duties, under the leadership of your guides.

At the beginning of the trip, you will learn how to efficiently pack your sea-kayak. It will then become a group task each day to load all the expedition gear into the kayaks before paddling to the next camping beach. The group will all help set up camp, cook meals and clean dishes. We have a pre-set meal plan, and the guides take overall responsibility, but everyone will take turns helping with the food prep, etc.

We find this expeditionary style of trip enhances the feeling of comradeship and creates a greater sense of adventure and self-sufficiency.

Day Seven: Swim with Whale Sharks

This is your last morning on Espiritu before packing up for the next adventure. Climbing aboard a fast motor boat, you will head directly into La Paz Bay where your next amazing marine encounter awaits. Whale sharks!! These are the largest fish in the world and you have the option of swimming with these beautiful gentle giants of the Sea.

Afterwards, you can take a quick shower and grab a sandwich before a relaxing drive to the shores of Baja on the Pacific Coast, about a 3.5 hour trip. Home for the night is a rustic cabin in Lopez Mateos, a small fishing village within Magdalena Bay, home of the Gray Whale breeding and calving grounds.

Day Eight: Watch the Majestic Gray Whales

This is the culmination of an exciting week. The anticipation of being ‘‘up close and personal’ with 40 ton whales and their calves is about to be rewarded as you embark on a 3-hour boat ride amongst the Gray Whales. Their curiosity often gets the better of them as they swim along side our tiny vessels.  Following a fresh lunch at a local restaurant in Lopez Mateos, you will return to La Paz. With fond memories and a final farewell dinner together you will have the chance to reflect back on the week’s experiences.

Day Nine: Departures

Breakfast at the hotel, and then take a group taxi directly to Los Cabos airport, arriving at noon.
