DAY ONE: ORIENTATION

Arrive by 6:30pm and meet your sister canoe trippers and WWE guide at the Sportsman’s Lodge on Kukagami Lake east of Sudbury, Ontario, for a brief and fun trip orientation to wilderness camping and canoe tripping Wild Women style. Get to know whom you’ll be adventuring with, study the canoe route on a map, ask your questions and enjoy a relaxing evening at the lodge.

DAY TWO: CHASING WATERFALLS

After breakfast, your guide will help you amalgamate your clothing and gear in your ample canoe packs, provided by WWE. Your put-in point is Matagamasi Lake – a short shuttle from the lodge.  After unloading gear and canoes, the group will have a brief canoe loading and paddling lesson, and then set off northwards following the shore of this beautiful lake with scenic rock outcrops of pink granite.

As you head further up the shore of this long lake, your group will visit an ancient pictograph. Wild women often leave a small offering at this sacred place, some tobacco, a feather, or something gathered along the route, to honour and remember those who have travelled here before.

You’ll then find a welcoming spot to catch some rest, a swim or perhaps some shade and down a healthy fresh lunch before setting off again in canoes to your first portage. As you head further up McCarthy Bay you’ll work as a team to carry gear and canoes over a small waterfall and then make your way downstream along a small creek to your first night’s campsite: an expanse of flat rock near a set of twin waterfalls!

Play in the pools and enjoy a natural massage as the water flows down the smooth rock and onto your shoulders. A perfect spa for the backcountry tripper.

After a hearty, warm meal, you can sit back by the campfire, listening to the water fall and flow by your campsite.

Day 3

DAY THREE: FIRST PORTAGE

The next morning you’ll have a hearty breakfast, break camp then head back upstream to continue deeper into the Temagami wilderness. You’ll find your first portage and carry gear over to the next small lake. You’ll then paddle and portage through two smaller lakes and then finally to a third lake – a crystal clear stunning body of water which will be your home for the night. Find a campsite, set up tents, gather firewood and enjoy a swim or explore the area before dinner, a scrumptious feast after a big day. The call of loons and an endless starry sky are sure to soothe and awe.

DAY FOUR: KUKAGAMI LAKE

The next day you’ll continue on your journey paddling and portaging over one more 1km trail into Kukagami Lake – the final leg of your journey. You’ll find a campsite along the north shore and spend one last night in this glorious wilderness.

Day 5

DAY FIVE: HOMEBOUND

You paddle for another couple of hours or so to the take-out: the place where it all began at the Sportsman’s lodge – no shuttle required! You’ll say your final farewells and head home fulfilled and energized from your time in the wild.
