Women’s Paddling Skills Retreat

About the Experience

Wild Women Expeditions is pleased to team up with Madawaska Kanu Centre (MKC) to offer a three full days of paddling instruction with the chance to learn whitewater Canoeing, whitewater Kayaking, or exploring calm waters in a Sea Kayak.  A wilderness resort built for paddlers, MKC has a stunning location on the banks of the Middle Madawaska River, in Eastern Ontario.  MKC is renowned for its hearty, healthy and locally sourced cuisine, freshly prepared for each meal.

This retreat provides an opportunity to learn new skills or fine-tune previously acquired paddling techniques.  Once mastered, these skills open up unlimited paddling possibilities for wilderness travel on the water.  We will have a team of talented female paddling instructors that will guide you through a fun-filled week-end of on-water and land-based programs.  We will travel to nearby Palmer Rapids for whitewater programs and Bark Lake for Sea Kayak.

The Kanu Centre will be your home base – an ideal location catering to paddlers, with the River just steps away.  The quiet of the surrounding forest provides a unique ambiance for après-paddling relaxation, mealtimes and overnights.  Accommodation is provided in twin share lodge rooms. Amenities include a log cabin sauna, outdoor showers, modern washhouse with hot showers, yoga retreat, cozy chalet with fireside lounge and wonderful collection of paddling literature.  A half hour relaxing massage is also included in your Wild Women Whitewater Retreat!

The weekend starts on Friday evening with check-ins between 7 – 10pm.
At 8 pm there will be a meet and greet where we will go over the program, connect with instructors and get to know one another.

Saturday morning will begin at 7am for anyone who wants to take part in a little yoga to wake-up the body and mind in our outdoor yoga studio, or feel free to go straight to the deck to enjoy a freshly brewed mug of locally roasted organic Madawaska Coffee.

8am breakfast is a hearty selection of fresh fruit, fresh out-of-the-oven baked goods, and cereal. At 9am we will rendezvous on the MKC deck before sorting ourselves into individual groups for canoeing and kayaking. From here we head off to get our gear, and make our way to the water for the morning session.

Lunch is back at MKC either on the deck or in front of the fire in the outside pavilion; weather dependent.  Back on the water for the afternoon, we will build on the mornings learning. A homemade snack greets you coming off the water to rekindle your energy.  Your instructor will then lead you in an after paddle stretch to ease those muscles that have been tested all day.

Our resident massage therapist will start in the late afternoon. Free time for the remainder of the afternoon can be enjoyed lying in a hammock, reading, strolling along the river, socializing, in the sauna or all of the above.

Dinner will be served at 6pm.
After dinner there is a chance to meet up with the instructors to review the day, and ask any questions you might have.  Both Open Canoe and Kayak videos will be screened in the evening.

Sunday morning will once again start with yoga at 7am followed by breakfast at 8am.
We will be ready to be back on the water at 9am to continue the learning curve.
Lunch will be served at noon either as a picnic lunch or back at MKC.
The afternoon will run similarly to Saturday’s. The massage therapist will be available before dinner.  After dinner, you will have the option to try stand-up paddle boarding, rolling practice, or take a sea kayak out plus other programming.

Monday morning and afternoon will progress much in the same way as Saturday and Sunday. We will finish up the retreat with a fun finale by 5 pm so you can be on your way!
