Day One – Arrival

Arrive at our private retreat centre, Lakeshore Cottages, anytime Friday afternoon between 12 pm and 4 pm. Lakeshore Cottages are located at 175 Suffolk Rd., Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. You will need to make your way to one of the 3 ferry terminals that service Salt Spring Island: Vesuvius, Fulford, or Long Harbour. Check out BC Ferry Schedules for details! Upon docking, you may drive to Lakeshore Cottages (instructions will be provided!) or arrange a pickup through WWE.

Upon arrival, get settled into your cottage. Then, the afternoon is yours to explore the tranquil 5-acre property located right on St. Mary’s Lake – the largest lake on Salt Spring Island. With a series of cozy cottages tucked in the trees, there’s a lovely lakeside where we will meet for morning and evening circles.

At 5 pm we will open the retreat with a brief orientation to the weekend and living in community followed by a fire ceremony, lighting our personal and collective intentions for the retreat.

Dinner will be a gourmet feast with local, organic fare. You can look forward to capping the night off with a campfire or chatting on the deck with serene lake views and glimpses of green hills in the distance.

Day Two

After breakfast, we will ease into our morning with a Hatha yoga practice that will ground us and support us to feel more connected to our own bodies. A class for all levels to help stretch, strengthen and move with ease. Attention is paid to alignment and developing an understanding of the postures, how they build on each other and their effects on the body, mind and spirit. You will leave the class feeling refreshed and warmed up for the activities of the day ahead.

An excursion to the Salt Spring Saturday Market will take place around lunchtime to nourish our senses with the beautiful creations of local artists and to enjoy the delicious offerings of farms and food available. We will have a picnic lunch at the oceanside park surrounded by the lively activity of the market with time afterwards to explore and experience!

After lunch we will take a guided hike Mount Erskine where we will go deep into nature. This 4 km trek is mainly under the coverage of trees on a well-kept trail. Along the way, watch for signs of doorways to the the fairy homes that have mysteriously developed on the trail! Arriving at the peak, we will be awed by the spectacular views overlooking the islands and ocean channel below (between Salt Spring and Vancouver Island), connecting with both the majesty of nature and of ourselves!

In the evening, there will be plenty of time to rest, explore, connect with others and do whatever your body, heart, and soul are called to.

Day Three

After breakfast you will be participating in your pre-selected sessions of either Option 1: sea kayaking -or- Option 2: taking a whale watching tour and SUP skills session to connect with the spirit of Water.

Option 1 – Sea Kayaking

This kayak adventure is great for both intermediate and beginner paddlers who want to try kayaking. We’ll have fun playing with the basics, including learning the parts of the kayak and paddle, strokes for turning, stopping, moving sideways and how to conserve energy for a full day of paddling. You’ll learn how to get in & out of the boat without getting soaked (the hardest part!!), what to do if you tip over, and use of the kayak rudder. Then we’ll head out for a 7 hour Marine Park Tour to allow you to get away from it all and explore the natural wonders of the Gulf Islands. We will launch our kayaks from a quiet spot on Salt Spring that will allow us easier access to the parks and protection from the winds. Wildlife sightings are common on this route – look out for eagles and their nests, river otters, harbour seals, sea lions, great blue herons, mink, porpoise, and a whole host of underwater life. We eat our gourmet lunches on a beautiful beach where you can swim or simply relax.

Option 2: Whale Watching Marine Safari + Stand Up Paddling

Today in a 1.5 hour SUP class you will learn the basics of stand up paddle boarding and have the practice time to solidify some of the fundamental skills. We’ll cover ocean safety, proper stance and form, and paddle techniques. All equipment is included: a PFD, board, paddle, and a leash.

We will eat our gourmet lunches on a beautiful beach where you can swim or simply relax.

In the afternoon we’ll embark on a 4 hour whale watching boat tour! You’ll learn first-hand about endangered species and ecosystems. Sightings can include orca whales, humpback whales, minke whales, grey whales, fin whales, harbour seals, porpoise, sea lions and bald eagles!

In the evening we will enjoy a delicious meal and then gather for a Qi Gong class.  This ancient Chinese art consists of a series of flowing movements that open the body up to a greater flow of energy and sense of well being. No experience is needed for this practice and all can participate, options and modifications will be given for all levels.will allow for rest, exploration, connection with others and self. There will be a sharing circle after dinner regarding our experience and insights throughout the day.

Day Four

Today will be the crystallization of our journey, beginning with a Yang Yin yoga class. Yang Yin is the perfect blend of effort and ease all wrapped up in one class. Spend the Yang part of class moving and gathering in your focus and concentration so you can then explore surrendering to the moment in the second half. Yin yoga uses long held supported postures to nourish and lengthen connective tissues in the body and explore mediation techniques to help ride the waves of fluctuations of the mind. No experience is needed and all can participate, options and modifications will be given for all levels.

After breakfast we will enjoy some inspiring dynamic movement and dance; infusing our circle with the creative flow as we prepare to travel and weave our experiences back into our lives at home. A lovely lunch will be served, followed by time for a closing circle.  Each person will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and intentions on what they will be taking away from the journey and how they will integrate their experience into their life back at home. We’ll then have leaving plenty of time to pack up and depart anytime before 3pm.
