Colca Canyon Riding Adventure

About the Experience

This unique adventure is a blissful mix of cowgirl, culture, and comfort. The trip begins – fittingly – with a leather saddle workshop on the gorgeous Bolognesi Bridge, giving a taste of all that is to come: the horseback ride of a lifetime in a land of wild, expansive, rolling beauty.

Travel along the deepest canyon in the world and experience rich Peruvian culture. Surrounded by vast, immense views and volcanos erupting along the skyline, you’ll journey along the mountain trails that have been there for hundreds of generations.

Our team of smooth and surefooted Peruvian Paso horses will lead you higher into the land of the condor on this unforgettable journey.  Each rider will primarily ride a dedicated horse during this journey, allowing for a true bond and connection to be created.

A different kind of holiday altogether, our trek through Colca Canyon is an immersive experience – both tranquil and thrilling. Pull on your handmade cowboy hat from Arequipa, saddle up, and prepare to explore all that this breathtaking little corner of Peru has to offer.

Wander through the rainbow display of fruit at the San Camillo market. Wrap your hands around a ream of thick Alpaca wool at an Andean weaving workshop. Sink your teeth into a creamy taste of locally farmed cheese. Stand in awed reverence overlooking the spectacular remains of an Incan fortress. And frolic in the heavenly warm waters of the gorgeous Corporaque hot springs.

And all of this, among the astonishing grandeur of the Andes. Here, your horse is your transport, as straw-roofed houses dot the distance…the delicate pebbled streets of Sibayo your own personal yellow brick road.

Here, the sky is yours.

DAY ONE: WELCOME TO AREQUIPA

We will meet in the city of Arequipa, a paradise of beautiful white buildings, large cowboy hats and excellent cuisine. The city, often overlooked by tourists, offers amazing museums, markets and traditional craftsman workshops.

We will visit a leather saddle workshop on the Bolognesi Bridge and learn about the tack we’ll use during our journey. After enjoying a typical Peruvian lunch, we will visit the Santa Catalina Convent, a historic ‘city within the city’ now turned incredible museum. With some free time in the afternoon, you may wish to stroll the small streets near the plaza or visit the San Camilo market to try out some unusual fruits or Arequipenan delights and find yourself an awesome cowboy hat. Rejoin the group for a welcome dinner and to review the plan for tomorrow.

DAY TWO: TRAVEL TO THE COLCA CANYON

We will drive about 3.5 hours from the desert city up to the high Andean plains today. Here, the communities pasture their llamas, alpacas and vicunas all along the mountainsides. Passing the high point we will drop down along a curvy mountain road into the Colca’s largest town, Chivay, and then up to the village of Yanque, a traditional rancher’s and farmer’s haven.

We will stay in Yanque at Miski Wasi B&B, a sweet family-run guesthouse, gather for our riding orientation and then visit the ranch to meet our horses and prepare our equipment.

We’ll enjoy a dinner full of local flavours and get some rest while we acclimatize to the higher altitude.

  • Activity: Travel day
  • Overnight: Miski Wasi B&B

DAY THREE: RIDE TO SIBAYO

We’ll get an early start and travel by van to meet our horses at the ‘Ventana del Colca’, the gateway to the Colca Valley, a traditional starting point for journeys coming from the Cusco region into the Colca Canyon.

Firstly, we’ll ride down through tall rock formations called the ‘stone cathedrals’ and you’ll begin to get a taste for the monumental landscapes that the canyon offers. When we arrive at Pulpera, a small village that is dedicated to organic dairy production, we’ll enjoy some local cheese and a picnic lunch.

After lunch, we’ll cross cattle ranges, and follow a ridge above the Colca river until we reach the village of Sibayo, famous for its beautiful pebble-laid streets and traditional straw-roofed houses. The community will receive us for meals and a detailed workshop about alpaca and sheep wool handling and traditional Andean weaving before we spend the night in typical family homes throughout the town.

We will be able to observe the dwellings, administrative and ceremonial areas of the Pre-Incan and Incan people who lived in Uyo Uyo.

On our way back down to the river, we will visit the natural hot springs of Chacapi, enjoy a soak and then ride up across the Cervantes colonial bridge to Miski Wasi B&B. After lunch, we will ride through Madrigal to the foot of the Chimpa Fortress where our horses will rest for the night. We’ll build a campfire and cook our dinner over the open fire. Those may wish to camp at the site or return to the guesthouse in Lari by van to sleep for the night.
