Misty Isles Sailing And Kayak Adventure

About the Experience

Step aboard the 43-foot schooner Misty Isles for 5 days of kayak training and exploration on our Misty Isles Sailing And Kayak Adventure! Discover the protected ocean waters surrounding Cortes Island and learn from experienced local guides while journeying by sailboat to new paddling destinations each day.

Nestled at the entrance of Desolation Sound, Cortes is one of several islands that make up the Discovery Islands on the north end of the Georgia Strait and is steeped in natural beauty!

Cortes boasts sandy beaches, beautiful lakes, warm water for swimming, dense forests, and an abundance of wildlife. It is also situated at the entrance to Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park, considered to be one of the best cruising grounds in BC. Cortes is located in the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the toq qaymɩxʷ (Klahoose), ɬəʔamɛn qaymɩxʷ (Tla’amin), and ʔop qaymɩxʷ (Homalco) Nations.

We’ll learn safe and comfortable technical skills, nautical navigation, and approaches to interpreting seasonal weather and tides. A profoundly beautiful and rugged landscape disappears into the calm waters that draw us into each day. Opportunities abound, ranging from wildlife encounters and sail raising to peaceful and serene moments, enveloped by nature.

Each Day’s end has us secured at anchor in front of Hollyhock, resting on sunny, southeastern beaches bathed by the Salish sea and just in time for dinner and a hot tub. Catch your breath at this peaceful retreat.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL

Meet the 43 ft schooner Misty Isles and its expedition crew at 10 am in Whaletown Bay, situated on the Southwest corner of Cortes Island. Once aboard, we will raise anchor and navigate through Uganda Passage while orienting ourselves to the schooner, the landscape, and each other.

Lunch on board will be followed by our first guided kayak tour and an afternoon transit to the Hollyhock beachfront. We’ll enjoy a gourmet dinner and settle into the beautiful campus and its accommodations.

DAY 2: MINDFULNESS ON MISTY ISLES

We’ll start the day with an early morning yoga session followed by breakfast with a view of the lodge deck. After a breakdown of weather and the day’s route, we will shuttle to the Misty Isles mooring by zodiac and embark for the warm waters and dramatic landscapes of Desolation Sound.

Each day will offer a different and unique paddling experience and conclude at the Hollyhock beach in time for relaxation and a beautiful meal.

DAY 3: EXPLORE THE SHORES

Following breakfast this morning and our daily weather overview, we reunite with Misty Isles and target one of 3 marine parks in the Desolation Sound area. We’ll paddle alongside remote shorelines and offshore islets to learn about the organisms that live there, as well as the dynamic forces that shape them.

An afternoon return to the Hollyhock beachfront will ensure time for relaxation and an evening dip in the warm tidal waters before enjoying dinner. Feel like more adventure? Take part in an optional night time paddle from the Hollyhock beach to witness the summer phenomenon known as Bioluminescence!

DAY 4: DESOLATION SOUND

Today we start with early bird yoga, preceded by breakfast and the upcoming paddle plan. A deeper foray into Desolation Sound is the order of the day. Entertain your sense of scale as we paddle beneath towering granite cliffs and contemplate the abstract perches of coastal Arbutus trees and their neighbours.

We’ll follow up lunch with a gentle forest hike to a freshwater lake for a swim before meandering back to Hollyhock for dinner and the closing of the day.

DAY 5: CORTES ISLAND

Our final day will offer an inside look at the impressive Hollyhock garden, hosted by a local master gardener. Wind and tide will lead the way to our paddle destination on the Western shores of Cortes Island. One last sojourn on the decks of Misty Isles will afford us time for a recap and our goodbyes.

The voyage will conclude in Whaletown Bay, in time to walk on board the ferry to Heriot Bay on Quadra Island (at approx 3:50 pm) which will get you to Campbell river at approx 6:15 pm.
