DAY ONE: ARRIVE IN CATANIA

Arrive at Catania airport, where you’ll be picked up at 3 pm and transferred to Masseria Le Chiuse di Guadagna. This is a charming family-run country inn where you’ll feel the warmth of Sicilian hospitality.

Tonight we’ll meet for orientation and enjoy a delicious dinner at the agriturismo as we get to know one another!

DAY TWO: SICILIAN SPECIALTIES

A lovely bike ride today takes us through Modica, the town of 100 churches and chocolate. Modica’s old town is situated at the junction of two valleys and split into Alta and Bassa (upper and lower). The city only has two main streets that run through the small valley bottom, while residential homes and even the city’s large cathedral are built up into the steep hillside.

In town, we’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a chocolate tasting at the oldest chocolate laboratory in town. The production of the Modica chocolate comes from the ancient Aztec cold-process method which was imported to this town by the Spanish during their domination of Sicily.

  • Cycling Distance:  37 km
  • Elevation:  265m gain

DAY THREE: WINE TASTING

Our ride today will take us to a local winery where you’ll enjoy a wine tasting as part of a light lunch. This is one of our favourite stops because we also get to enjoy good olive oil and a wonderful picnic under the carob trees. The ride itself is a relaxing one along quiet roads fenced by dry stone walls. Just recently the UNESCO has included the technique of the dry stone walls as human heritage. We’ll have a coffee stop in Noto after the winery, on the way back to the Masseria. Noto is famous for its fine buildings of the early 18th century, many of which are considered to be among the finest examples of the Sicilian Baroque style, which make the city a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Tonight we’ll relax and enjoy a meal together at the Masseria.

  • Cycling Distance: 47 km
  • Elevation: 499m gain

DAY FOUR: CYCLING THROUGH SIRACUSA

Today we’ll leave Masseria Le Chiuse di Guadagna, and head towards Siracusa, one of the oldest towns on the island. Our day starts with a shuttle to the gate of Pantalica Natural Park (UNESCO heritage site) where we’ll start our bike ride along an old railway, now converted into a bike path that passes through one of the most beautiful areas of the entire island.  This place has a lot of value, one being the beauty of the natural environment with endemic plants and the Anapo river that often flows by the bike path. There’s also a lot of historic value, with the Necropolis that contains over 5,000 tombs cut into the rock near open stone quarries, most of them dating from the 13th to 7th centuries BC. Our bike ride takes us to a local agriturismo for a light lunch, and we will then drive to Ortigia (one hour).

We’ll take a walking tour of this small island, which is the ancient heart of Siracusa, established by the Greeks. Bring along your swimsuit if you like; you may enjoy a dip in one of the rivers along the way!

  • Cycling Distance: 14 km
  • Elevation: 234m gain

DAY FIVE: BOATING THE CICLOPES ISLANDS

A van transfer will take the group to Milazzo this morning. Along the way, we’ll stop at the protected area of Ciclopes Islands where we’ll have a one hour boat ride. The boat has a transparent keel, so you’ll see the ocean under the boat as a guide tells us about the natural area around us. The area includes the Faraglioni of Aci Trezza and Isola Lachea. The latter, which extends for 2 hectares, according to what was narrated in the Odyssey of Homer, would be the island inhabited only by goats, while the Faraglioni would be the stones thrown by Polyphemus against Ulysses.

Our shuttle continues to Milazzo to catch the ferry to Salina Island.

DAY SIX: VOLCANIC VIEWS

Our local guide will take us today to the top of one of the two peaks of Salina: Monte Fossa Delle Felci, where we’ll see the border of the old volcanic crater that is now completely covered by forest. This is the highest trail overlooking the entire archipelago and the coastline including Etna! We’ll have sandwiches and juice for lunch while hiking.

  • Hiking Distance: 9 km
  • Elevation: 590m gain, 450m descent

DAY SEVEN: KAYAKING AND HIKING

After breakfast, we head back to Sicily. We’ll start our day with a 2-hour hike to the crater of the Vulcano with our local guide. According to mythology, Vulcano is the Island that in ancient times was the seat of the Greek God of Fire, Hephaestus. The Romans called him Vulcano and since then all the ancient mountains spitting fire have been called “volcanoes”.

After an independent lunch, we’ll head out on the water for a refreshing 3-hour kayaking experience, including a stop at the lava stone caves.

Hydrofoil back to Salina in the second half of the afternoon. Dinner is included at Francesca’s house where you may have time to enjoy another beautiful sunset in the Aeolian Islands.

  • Activity: Hiking
  • Distance: 6 km
  • Elevation: 360 m gain, 320 m descent

DAY EIGHT: EXPLORING LIPARI ISLAND

After breakfast, we head back to Sicily with a stop and a walk at the close Lipari island. Meet our local guide at the Lipari dock. A short hydrofoil ride will take us to Lipari Island, the largest of the seven islands. The walking tour will introduce us to the remains of explosive eruptions from the past where you will see numerous lava domes and obsidian lava flows. This island is also known for its pumice. Enjoy getting to know another island in the chain and the spectacular views along the way.

After the island hike and an independent lunch, a second hydrofoil will take us to Sicily’s Milazzo port. From here, we’ll take a van shuttle to Taormina, one of the most iconic tourist destinations in Sicily due to its position, the Greek-Roman theatre. Once in town, you may like to walk along the Corso Umberto with its classical music, cafés, pastry shops, art galleries, and clothing boutiques. A hydrofoil will take us back to Salina for dinner together.

DAY NINE: MOUNT ETNA

Finally, we get a taste of Mount Etna! We’ll have a 40-minute transfer to Zafferana Etnea, where we’ll start the excursion. This will be light hiking with a jeep transfer. During this hike, you’ll understand the complexity of this big volcano which has been safely active for about 600,000 years! Etna is another UNESCO site of this trip and is included on the human heritage list because of its important terrestrial ecosystems, including endemic flora and fauna and because of its activity that makes Etna volcano a natural laboratory for the study of ecological and biological processes. Etna is also the highest island volcano in Europe and the highest stratovolcano in the world! Enjoy the experience!

After the hiking, we’ll shuttle back to Taormina for our farewell dinner as we celebrate a great week in Sicily.

  • Hiking Distance: 3 km
  • Elevation: 10m gain, 120m descent

Arrange your departure flight from Catania International Airport (CTA) for any time today. The ride to the airport is approximately 1 hour and is not included in the trip cost.
