Women on Water 2018 Session Descriptions

On Saturday, choose 1 discipline and level that best suits your interests and skill set. Spend the whole day honing your skills!

Sunday will be your taste-tester day! Choose 2 sessions (1 morning + 1 afternoon).

Saturday All Day Clinics (Choose 1):

  • Beginner Kayaking Skills: Today is about fun and relaxing! This clinic is designed to get you out on the water, to introduce you to kayaking. The day will begin discussing the different types of kayaks, equipment, and safety gear. We’ll then venture into the water and learn how to launch and land a kayak in style! We’ll head out on the water and review all the basic skills of kayaking. Here, we’ll cover the forward stroke, sweep strokes, pivot turns, and draw strokes. After lunch, we’ll get wet playing in our kayaks, wet exiting and rescuing each other. Lots of laughs and learning with your coaches for the day!

  • Intermediate Kayaking Skills:  This clinic is recommended for women that have already taken a beginner course with us at WOW, or you’ve been on one of our trips and have experience with kayaking. The day will begin with a strokes review, then we will move into working on powerful forward strokes, blended strokes, edging, bracing, and rescues. Be prepared to get wet in the afternoon! We will cover assisted rescues, self-rescues, and scramble rescues. Coaches at this level are open to requests so if there’s anything you’ve been craving to learn in your kayak, just ask and we’ll spend some time coaching that particular skill for you.

  • Canoeing: Participants may choose to paddle solo or classic tandem, and we will all paddle together. This participant-driven program will focus on what it truly means to “paddle your own canoe” and on the finer points of efficient tandem canoeing skills. Using basic strokes we will develop confidence in glide and maneuverability. Participants must be able to comfortably enter and exit a canoe and balance their body weight. The skills we will  practice include: forward & back paddling, stationary and power pivots, stationary and power sideslips, and under power dock landings. Everyone will enjoy even if your skill levels vary in experience.

  • What’s SUP? Introduction to Stand-Up Paddling: This course is open to all who want to know what SUP is all about. We’ll  begin the day learning about different boards, different paddles, what a paddle leash is, and how to carry a board safely. You’ll then head down to the water and SUP! Spend a day learning SUP balance, strokes, and maybe even a rescue…wait, how do you rescue someone on a SUP? You’ll find out soon.

  • Intermediate SUP: This class is for those who may already own a SUP, have taken a lesson, or have the basic balance and skills on a SUP board. In this clinic, we will break down basic skills and work on making them more effective. You will workshop the forward stroke on tour and how to forward paddle effectively while not tiring yourself out. You will also work on balancing, walking your board, pivoting, and edging. Be prepared to get wet. You can’t learn without falling in!

Saturday Afternoon (3:30-4:30 PM): As in past years, we will have social time and dry land workshops after the last of the on-water workshops have finished for the day. Feel free to enjoy a cool drink and socialize while enjoying these workshops. We will provide you with the list of possibilities before the event. No registration required. Just drop on in!

Sunday Morning Sessions (Choose 1):

  • SUP Yoga: Open to everyone! Balance, stretch, and play.

  • Try SUP Tour: Open to everyone! Try SUP or practice your new skills on a SUP tour of the beautiful waters around Camp Tapawingo.

  • SUP Superstars: If you took the SUP Basics course on Saturday this is a builder on those skills. This course will focus on the fun pivots and quick turns you can do on your board to make you a more effective SUP-er.

  • Try Canoeing Tour: Open to everyone! Try canoeing or practice your new skills on a canoe tour of the beautiful waters around Camp Tapawingo.

  • Try Kayaking Tour: Open to everyone! Try kayaking or practice your new skills on a kayak tour of the beautiful waters around Camp Tapawingo.

  • Kayak Edging and Bracing: In this session, we will play in our kayaks to increase our comfort level and advance our skills. We will talk about why we put our kayak on edge and practice it. We will also learn a low brace to help protect us from going in the water! We’ll then combine our edging with some strokes to make our kayak turn like a sports car:)

  • Forward Paddling and blended strokes in a kayak with video feedback: In this session, we will build on your forward paddling skills. This is a great clinic to take if you plan to take a kayak trip this summer, or if you plan on paddling on your own. We will work on a number of strokes, capture video of you while you practice, and then give individual feedback. This is an effective way to learn how and where there can be improvement made.

  • Navigation and Weather in the Wild: This is a dryland session which will cover navigating on the water. Whether you’re a canoeist or a kayaker, this session will cover piloting, aiming off, shooting a bearing, DED Reckoning and everything else you need to know to head out on a trip this summer and find your way home! We will also take a look at the weather on a trip. How to get an accurate report, how to plan ahead, and how to make judgment calls on whether to paddle or stay in camp.

Sunday Afternoon Sessions (Choose 1):

  • SUP Yoga: Open to everyone! Balance, stretch, and play.

  • Try SUP Tour: Open to everyone! Try SUP or practice your new skills on a SUP tour of the beautiful waters around Camp Tapawingo.

  • SUP Forward Paddling: This is an excellent clinic to take if you want to want to start using your SUP to increase your fitness level or if you plan on getting into distance paddling. Ariel Amaral, who is our own Canadian international competitor, will be leading this clinic.

  • Beginner Kayak Assisted Rescues: This session is for participants who would like to get more comfortable rescuing into their kayak. We will cover the wet exit, assisted rescue and self-rescue. This is a great course to take after beginner kayak skills from Saturday to get really comfortable with your kayak rescues.

  • Kayak Balance, Play, and Self Rescues: The key to getting comfortable in a kayak is by getting out of the seat and getting on top! Work on your balance and comfort by learning techniques for scrambling around your kayak. In the process, you’re sure to get wet but you’ll have fun! There will be rescues involved, and you’ll spend  a lot of your time in the water. Try it! You’ll love it!

  • Kayak – Try Greenland Paddling: This afternoon we will pick up sticks and see what’s it’s like to paddle with a traditional Inuit paddle. A Greenland Paddle is a great paddle to use if you have any wrist or back issues. We will play with the different strokes with this paddle, and find out how effective it is compared to a regular paddle. We can also demo the Greenland roll and spend some time working on your own roll in a kayak! Dympna Hayes will be teaching this clinic and will have tricks to improve your comfort when upside down.
